Now Hiring: Lead Guide

Embark is hiring for the position of Lead Guide for a 2-month long term, August 6 - October 8.

Compensation: 

$4,000 - 5,000 (depending on experience) for 21 - 25 program days over a 2-month long term.

Requirements:

WFR certification, AMGA Single Pitch Instructor certification

Description: 

This position plans, prepares for, organizes and carries out all of Embarks programming during the 2-month long program term. This includes planning and hosting all meetups and ensuring the delivery of Embark’s outdoor curriculum, and planning and guiding two 2-night campouts for all participants and one 2 or 3-night backpacking trip with the 2nd-year graduates. Duties also include coordinating with participants before each program day to keep track of who is attending and who needs rides, as well as coordinating with volunteers.

General: 

  • Use embarkoutdoors.org email address for correspondence regarding the Embark Program

  • Organize and label all gear in the storage unit in a way that makes sense to you and is easy for you to access for the remainder of the season.

Programming

Schedule, share, and host Embark’s bi-weekly meetings

  • Manage Embark’s event calendar, making any necessary adaptations and adjustments

  • Using the Volunteer Shift sign-up sheet, follow up with volunteers who are signed up for upcoming shifts and make sure they are able to/planning on coming and know when and where to meet.

  • Coordinate with each individual girl to see who need rides, and then with volunteers to see who can provide rides. Ensure volunteers have correct addresses and contact numbers for the girls they’re picking up.

  • Pull and bring whatever gear is necessary for each day of programming

  • Wash and put all gear away after each meetup.

Curriculum

  • Prepare lessons for each hike or team outing (based upon Embark’s existing curriculum), while ensuring that each skill learned builds upon the last. 

  • Prepare necessary learning materials for lessons.

  • Continually ideate and present new ways to expand our programming in Utah within our budget. 

Camping trip production:

  • Secure campsite reservations (using the Embark debit card) for each camping trip.

  • Present camping trip proposals to Camille for approval 4 weeks before scheduled camping trip dates - see example docs

  • Create packing list for girls 

  • Create packing list for gear needed on trip.

  • Prepare trip menu (or work with alumnae to create menu)

  • Shop for all food, incidentals, kitchen supplies etc (or task alumnae to shop for food).

  • Prepare all necessary gear, and clothing, med supplies etc to be brought on trip

  • Reserve Uhaul trailer for camping trips

  • Pick up Sequoia, pick up Uhaul trailer, and load trailer for trip. (use volunteer help for this)

  • Produce camping trip entirely - including locations, gear, food menus, safety protocols, etc. 

Camping trip breakdown:

  • Unpack gear, wash used clothing and kitchen items and return to gear storage.

Gear:

  • Keep organized records of gear inventory, check-ins and check-outs, and any changes to gear.

  • Present Camille with any needed gear items, make purchases of specific necessary gear or ask brands for donations.

Now Hiring: Volunteer Mentor — Hiking & Climbing

Volunteers rotate shifts to provide consistent mentorship in hiking, climbing, camping, rappelling, navigation, first aid, swimming, and more. Volunteers also help give our girls rides to and from our programming.
